THEM SNIPING AT EACH OTHER WASN’T GOING TO SOLVE THIS MESS, Howard had to try and hold his tongue, even when Maria goaded him, if he wanted to get back inside the house, and fix his marriage.  .  ❝I assumed it wouldn’t❞ he replies calmly, that was why he had not walked towards, her, had not taken their son f r o m her grasp. HE WAS TREADING ON DANGEROUSLY THIN ICE AS IT WAS, and as angry as he was, that she had all these restrictions how could he blame her really?. He watches his son, and it occurs to him he hasn’t felt this unsure about something in YEARS. He half expects Anthony to refuse, to cling to his mother but the little boy doesn’t. He walks steadily albeit slowly, towards Howard and the man crouches down to his level.  .  ❝Hello Anthony.❞ it’s strange, how his voice c a t c h e s in his throat, how he cautiously holds his arms open, waiting to see if the child will allow him to pick him up. WHEN HE DOES IT IS PERHAPS A SURPRISE TO THE THREE OF THEM, EVEN TO ANTHONY, who looks at his Dad with an expression of curiosity and it becomes clear to Howard that he hasn’t held him since he was around six months old.

what follows is oddly therapeutic for them all. sobering, one could even say. maria knows he hasn’t held tony in the longest time, knows he’s afraid to hold their son ( for whatever reason ), but when howard picks the boy up and they share that gaze, maria will thin her lips and feel a lump in her own throat. it’s a sweet moment, as much as she wants to deny it, for to see her husband hold THEIR child is one of only a few things she’s ever wanted; and now she’s gotten it.   ❛ say hello to your daddy, anthony. ❜   she encourages him softly, maria trying to subtly wipe the tear that escapes down her cheek, hoping that howard doesn’t see it. but the boy will listen to his mother, mumbling to howard exactly what she’s told him. his words aren’t fully clear yet, but he’s only two; he’s still learning.
