she buries her face in the crook of maria’s neck, and it’s almost like a comfort, just to have that closeness again. the closeness that she has been missing for YEARS, and it’s almost hard to believe she had tried to live without it. that she DID live without it for all those years. “ don’t be sorry, mama. ” she says, shaking her head. “ it wasn’t your fault. ” sniffing, the young woman releases her mother allowing her to pull back and wipe tears from her cheeks.

as tears dry, tatiana takes her sleeve, wiping her nose on the soft cotton and willing herself to stop with her tears, as her mother instructs. there was no need for them now. no tears for her mama. only happiness. she manages a smile at her mother’s compliment, and a small laugh, as she pulls a strand of hair behind her ear. “ thank you, mama. but, everyone knows beauty is inherited. ” tanya tells her, “ i get it from you, mama. ”

she’s thankful that her daughter doesn’t blame her for being absent for so long, for it truly isn’t maria’s fault she’d been kept hidden from the public, her survival kept secret. but alas, with the fall of shield, none of that matters anymore. she smiles sadly at her daughter, hands dropping from tanya’s cheeks as the other wipes at her face with her sleeves, before maria is holding both of her daughter’s hands in hers.   ❛ i do not believe that. ❜   she chuckles at the compliment, a tear or two still falling down her cheek.

❛ i have missed you so much. ❜   she cannot help herself in saying it, hands squeezing tanya’s tightly before maria is pulling her in for another tight embrace. the italian has never been one to hold out when it comes to hugs. if anything, it’s one of her specialties.
